Praise for Unfolding Origami

“Some wounds don’t bleed—they fold you inward. Galese traces that quiet unraveling and the courageous work of unfolding back into yourself. This memoir is both a survival guide and a testament to transforming pain into something fiercely alive and meaningful.”

Sarah Edmondson Podcast Host & Author of A Little Bit Culty

Unfolding Origami is a raw and psychologically honest memoir about grooming, coercion, and the ways young women are conditioned to silence their instincts in exchange for belonging. Galese explores the social dynamics of college, party culture, and Greek life that can blur the line between acceptance and danger, revealing how harmful systems are perpetuated under the guise of tradition, loyalty, and sisterhood.”

About the Book

About the Book

During the first few months of my freshman year in college, I became entangled in a coercive, cult-like dynamic with my suitemates surrounding being sexually assaulted by someone related to a roommate, but the trauma didn’t end there. I pledged a sorority whose hazing rituals eerily mirrored the powerlessness I had just survived. The lines between fear, loyalty, and identity blurred, leaving me dissociated and questioning my own reality, and who I was. To cope, I turned to alcohol and pills, trying to numb the confusion and pain that no one seemed to see—or validate. Years later, sobriety opened a door to deeper healing.

Now a therapist, I began the difficult work of confronting my own trauma, engaging in intensive therapy to unravel the psychological programming that had kept me trapped in fear and disconnected from my intuition. This memoir reveals how easily someone can lose touch with their intuition when surrounded by groupthink and gaslighting. It’s a story of reclaiming self-trust, recognizing coercion in unexpected places, and the long, nonlinear journey of healing.

About Loren

Loren Galese

Loren Galese is the author of Unfolding Origami: A Memoir and the owner of Woven Self Therapeutic Services, LLC. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of New Jersey who has been practicing since 2014.

Loren didn’t originally set out to become a therapist. She began her academic path in art education, drawn to creativity, expression, and emotions. Her first semester of college she took an introductory psychology class and something clicked. Learning about the brain, behavior, and the “why” behind how we feel and act felt endlessly fascinating, and it changed her path.

Anxiety has been part of Loren’s own life since childhood, so she understands firsthand how overwhelming it can be to move through the world while your nervous system feels constantly on high alert. That lived experience, combined with her training, shaped a deep desire to help others feel more grounded, understood, and less alone.

She’s worked across various populations and found her niche supporting individuals, couples, and families navigating anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, life transitions, stress, family issues, boundaries, and empowerment.

Loren is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Internal Family Systems (IFS). For couples work, she incorporates the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). She doesn’t believe one modality fits all; building trust in the therapeutic relationship matters most.

Her approach is person-centered and collaborative. You set the pace, and you move forward in a way that feels safe and manageable, never rushed or forced.
